McNaughton 09 : A few of us came down on Friday afternoon to see the 150-mile runners at McNaughton finish their first lap. Saturday, those of us doing "only" the 50-miler will have our chance on the course. Thankfully, the rain is supposed to be done by then, but I think there will still be some mud left for us. McNaughton, near Pekin, IL, offers a 50, 100 and 150 race. This year's race took place the weekend of April 10-12.

MadCity 50K 2009 : The MadCity 50K took place April 4 on the shores of Madison's Lake Wingra and through the University of Wisconsin Arboretum. In its first two years the race featured the USA Track & Field National 100K championship. Because of scheduling concerns with the world championship, the national championship was not held in Madison this year; however, it will return in 2010. Mark the date: April 10, 2010. This year's race was turned into a lightening fast 50K solo and team event. Weather, for the first time in race history, was great -- 40s, 50s and no wind or precipitation. Men's winner was Patrick Russell in 3:08:28 and the women's winner (third person overall) was Julie Spencer in 3:34:45. For full results, go to the race site: http://www.madcity100k.com

Glacial Trail 50/50 2008 : The Li'l Mister took a few photos at the October 12th Glacial Trail 50/50. Held in the Northern Kettle Moraine, many think of it as the tougher big brother to the Ice Age 50 in May. The trails in the northern section are generally challenging -- both in footing and in their generous portions of ups and downs. However, the effort is well worth it -- when the fall colors are in full bloom this is one of the prettiest courses in the Midwest. Results are available at: http://www.badgerlandstriders.org/GT50/default.html

Badwater 2008 - Mary's turn : After crewing at the Badwater Ultramarathon -- 135 miles from Badwater in Death Valley to the Portal Trail of Mt. Whitney –– I decided to give it a try myself this year. My crew included Bonnie Busch, Nikki Seger, Stephanie Astell and Scott Jacaway. All except Stephanie were veteran race finishers and crew people. Competitors have 60 hours to complete the event and I hoped to go under 48 to "buckle." I squeezed in just seconds under 46 hours. Many thanks to my crew, without which I could have never done this -- SERIOUSLY! BTW, thanks to my crew for the photos posted, as well as the Badwater staff -- several photos are taken from the race website: http://www.badwater.com.

Kettle Moraine 2008 : On June 7-8 the Li'l Mister and I hosted the Tamarack Aid Station at the Kettle Moraine 100 in La Grange, WI (about an hour southwest of Milwaukee). We saw the 100K and 100 mile runners at miles 5 and 57, and then the 100-milers again at miles 67 and 95. The weather this year? OH MY!!!! Tropical heat and humidity for the day followed by torrential rains, thunder, lightening and wind throughout the night and into the next day. In fact, our photo collection is a bit sparse this year because the camera kept getting wet and shutting down.

Ice Age 08 : The Ice Age 50 (a 50-mile race and a 50-kilometer) was May 10 in La Grange, Wis. La Grange is about midway between Milwaukee and Madison. Weather was perfect, 40s-50s with cloud cover most of the day. The 50-mile winners were locals Joel Lammers in 7:21:35 and Christine Crawford in 7:43:43. Full results are at: http://www.onlineraceresults.com/event/view_event.php?event_id=2524. Thanks to Dave Gorski (aka: Li'l Mister) for taking the photos!

Chicago Lakefront 50K Spring 08 : The annual Chicago Lakefront 50K -- one of my favorite spring events -- was on April 5. Unfortunately, that was only a week before the Mad City 100K. My little legs weren't up to doing both, so I just went to Chicago to enjoy a slumber party at Nikki and Jennifer's and then run one of the three loops of the 50K the next morning. Of course, the year that I don't sign up to do the whole race the weather is WONDERFUL!!!! For once, Pat, Chicago DIDN'T blow! :)

Badwater 2007 - Nikki Seger : This year's Badwater Ultramarathon -- 135 miles from the lowest point in Death Valley (and the western hemisphere) to the Whitney Portal -- was July 23-25. My introduction to the race was last year, crewing for Jay Hodde. This year, I crewed for one of his other crew members, Nikki Seger. We lucked out with great weather -- "only" about a high of 115. The race saw its highest finisher rate ever.

We see the 100-milers four times: at mile 5, 57+, 67+, and 95. Many thanks to our volunteers who included Nancy Sellars, Cheryl Schmelzer, Paul Gionfriddo, Julie Schroeder, Bob Scherer, Ian Stevens, Eileen Sherburne, Flora Sherburne, Uncle Al Sauld, Debbie McKinzie, Tom Chopp and Julie Aistars.

TPs May 19 -- No Kris! : Having gotten to the trail early to take photos of my friend Cathy Diamond at the start of the Southern Kettle Moraine Challenge (see gallery), I decided to use up a few more pixels in the camera and take photos of TPs gathered for a Saturday morning run. You'll notice it is a small group. Being the week after Ice Age 50, a lot of TPs took the weekend off. Even Kris and John were out of town! We were so lost without you guys! John, how do you figure out that breakfast bill so quickly?!?!?

Jason's Ice Age 1000 : Jason Dorgan, finisher of Badwater, the Grand Slam and many other ultra achievements, as well as co-RD of the Kettle Moraine 100, decided to run the COMPLETE Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin -- 1,079 miles. Doing this on an extended vacation from work, he had a tight timeline -- April 14 to May 6. Dave and I had the priviledge of spending a few hours with him May 5 -- the day before he would finish his quest. Expecting to find him tired and worn, we were surprised to see Jason upbeat and RUNNING. Not just a light jog, not a death march sort of run, but full-scale, feet off the ground RUNNING! Wow! To learn about the whole run, go to Jason's website at: http://blog.iceagetrail1000.com/

Badwater 2006 : In July, 2006, I joined Jay Hodde's crew at the 135-mile Badwater race. For those unfamiliar, BW is a run that goes from the lowest point in North America to the Whitney Portal -- the highest point in the 48 States. Temps got as high as 129F. A bit warm to say the least.

Catalina Marathon 07 : A bunch of us from Milwaukee (TPs and Striders) went to the Catalina Marathon. The race was March 17, St. Patty's Day. A good time was had by all, except poor Sally, who caught the flu. And, of course, all of us toasted Betty at some time during the weekend. Betty was stuck at home, the victim of FOUR broken bones suffered in a fall at a training run the week before. Brummercrud!
